A microwave's control panel is an essential interface that easily connects users to the appliance's features. It improves convenience, safety, and efficiency in culinary operations by allowing users to easily use features like defrosting and changing cooking times and power levels. It is levels. Research Insights

  • Heating is the primary function used. Touchpads become greasy from prolonged use.

  • Combining all functions is necessary as people prefer a microwave with convection, grill, autocook, etc.

  • Most users don't know all the functions. When using an unfamiliar oven, time is the most critical adjustable function for the users.

  • The majority use a microwave for a short duration of 1–2 minutes.

  • Cost and ease of use influence buying decisions.

  • Most microwaves beep as they finish the timer. Users either wait by the device or return upon hearing the audio feedback.

  • Most users use the 30 sec+ buttons the most when deciding the time. Prefer to add time incrementally.

User Persona

Conceptual idea for the redesign

  • ​Microwave, Grill, Convection, Defrost, Auto Cook will be used for heating/cooking food. The

  • most used features, according to users, are convection & timed cooking to cook food.

  • Feedback will be provided through voice and visual (light and colors), timer countdown, and progress bars.

  • Cooking can be done by time/temperature (most preferred by users).

  • Interactions provided will be tangible, voice-based, touch.

  • Buttons will be provided Start, Stop, and various modes.

Features

  • The panel starts with a welcome message — "Hello" for the user.

  • It has five modes- Microwave, Grill, Convection, Defrost, and Autocook.

  • The round knob dial controls the amount of time/temperature for cooking.

  • Users can give time or temperature settings for cooking; this can be adjusted through buttons below the knob.

  • The blue circle at the top has the voice assistant help + written feedback/instructions for user ease.

  • Start and stop buttons are given with classic color feedback of green and red.
